The National Family Benefit Scheme provides families with lump sum cash assistance on the death of the primary breadwinner.
NFBS is a component of the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP). Under the scheme a lump sum relief in the amount of Rs. 10,000 for accidental death and Rs. 5, 000 for a death due to natural cause is released within a month upon application, to a family that has lost a primary bread winner. A primary breadwinner is a member of a family whose earnings contribute substantially to household income between the age group of 18–65 years.
NFBS Court Order Summary
- A lump sum of Rs. 10,000/- has to be paid within four weeks of a breadwinner’s death through the local Sarpanch. (SC Order dated 28 November 2001)
- The benefit under the scheme cannot be withdrawn till until another order by any State Government or Union Territory. (SC Order dated 18 November 2004)
